Following the participation in the multinational military mission sent to China to restore the order after the Boxer uprising, in 1901 Italy obtained a territorial concession.
From 1917 two post offices were also set up in Pechino and Tientsin. These were made to serve the Legation and Consulate staff, as well as the Italian military forces in the area.
The post offices used here Italian stamps that, were locally overprinted with the denomination in local currency. Some of these stamps were printed in only a few copies and are among the most important items in a collection of Italian stamps.
